Wennet is a small community wifi mesh network, joining the notspots around the side of the Lune Valley. We built our first nodes in 2005 thanks to a grant from the NWDA (video). By running the company on a commercial basis as a Community Interest Company with the profits going back into the network we have quadrupled its size.
We laid and lit the first rural community fibre to the home in May 2009 (jfdi fibre video). We are currently working on ideas to bring a high speed link into the area so we can upgrade our service, but it is very difficult to get fibre feeds out into this area, AKA the Final Third.
